One Year Monitoring of Ecological Interaction of Silurus glanis in a Novel Invaded Oligotrophic Deep Lake (Lake Maggiore)

چکیده

The European catfish (Silurus glanis) was introduced in Italy during the last century for aquaculture purposes, and now it is well-established. S. glanis an invasive species a top predator that can deplete prey supply surrounding habitat, leading to changes aquatic food web. Consequently, its presence considered threat native fish populations. Its Lake Maggiore (Northern Italy) recent there lack of knowledge about ability completely exploit this new ecosystem throughout year. This study corroborated both pelagic littoral habitats, promoting trophic interactions habitats. Over 2019, multiple sampling approaches have been applied by collecting analysing stomach contents with aim inferring freshwater community. diet mainly based on crayfish (Orconectes limosus), followed six genus Corbicula; two (Padogobius bonelli Salaria fluviatilis) were added list known fish. Notably alarmingly early potential top-down pressure towards all levels, young individuals proved also feed crayfish. showed hunt at deep depths (>60 m) high growth rate, despite being oligotrophic.

Allochthonous contribution to seasonal and spatial variability of organic matter sedimentation in a deep oligotrophic lake (Lake Constance)

Introduction Previous studies analysing the chemical composition of profundal sediments of Lake Constance suggest a overall large contribution of allochthonous material to total sedimentation but also a large spatial variability in the relative importance of allochthonous versus autochthonous sedimentation. Here we analyse sedimenting particulate organic matter (POMsed ) during an annual cycle ...

Nutritional value of freshwater mesozooplankton assemblages from Hanna Dam Lake, Iran, during a one-year study

Nutritional value of freshwater mesozooplankton, fatty acid (FA) and amino acid (AA) compositions were determined in the middle of each season for a one-year period from May 2009 to February 2010 in Hanna Dam Lake, Isfahan, Iran. FA and AA composition significantly (P<0.05) varied in relation to the seasonal changes of water quality, phytoplankton and zooplankton community. The content of satur...

Ecology and Distribution of Thaumarchaea in the Deep Hypolimnion of Lake Maggiore

Ammonia-oxidizing Archaea (AOA) play an important role in the oxidation of ammonia in terrestrial, marine, and geothermal habitats, as confirmed by a number of studies specifically focused on those environments. Much less is known about the ecological role of AOA in freshwaters. In order to reach a high resolution at the Thaumarchaea community level, the probe MGI-535 was specifically designed ...

Morphological and Ecological Differences Between Shallow- and Deep-water Lake Trout in Lake Mistassini, Quebec

Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in Lake Mistassini, Quebec, were investigated to determine whether they resembled the lean and siscowet morphotypes of Lake Superior and Great Slave Lake. Lake trout caught in deep water were predicted to resemble the siscowet morphotype and to be better adapted for vertical migration (i.e., low percent buoyancy) than those caught in shallow water. The research...
